The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroad in December 2019 was down compared to December 2018. Carloads originated decreased 3.5 percent, from 340,733 in December 2018 to 328,894 in December 2019.
Nonmetallic Minerals led gains with a 21.6 percent increase. Stone, Clay and Glass Products was up 15.3 percent, and Grain Mill Products and Chemicals increased 13.6 and 8.7 percent respectively. Coal led declines, down 19.2 percent. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel, Grain, Other Carloads, Waste and Scrap Materials, Metallic Ores, Trailer or Container and Metal and Products were also down in December.

Carloads originated for 2019 were at 4,221,375 through December 31, down about 36,000 carloads, or 0.9 percent from 2018.
