Community

Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina
Nearly 600,000 people grapple with food insecurity across central and eastern North Carolina. The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina has provided food and built solutions to end hunger across 34 counties in our area for more than 40 years. It provides close to 69 million meals each year to people in need.

Our partnership with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina started in 2001. In the last five years, Railinc has donated more than a quarter million meals to support the Food Bank's important mission of ensuring no one in our area goes hungry. We provide opportunities for employees to offer hands-on support by volunteering at the facility during work hours to sort and pack food. Our volunteers have packed between 9,000 and 50,000 pounds of food each visit. We also participate in Giving Tuesday to help triple match donations and host an annual Chili, Curry, and Dessert Cook-Off to benefit the Food Bank. Our cook-offs provide employees with an opportunity to get together and enjoy some friendly competition while giving back – each of our cook-offs has provided more than 2,000 meals to people in need in our community.

Hear about some of our employees' experiences volunteering with the Food Bank:

"I have volunteered with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina to sort and pack food several times and I have participated in the Chili, Curry, and Dessert Cook-Off. It is a satisfying experience and it feels good to work toward ending hunger in our community. I also appreciate the opportunity to build friendships with colleagues who I don't work with regularly and learn more about the work of other departments here at Railinc. I am grateful that the culture and management at Railinc encourage giving back to our community through their partnership with the Food Bank." – Murali, Senior Database Administrator

"When I volunteer at the Food Bank, we are always able to get a lot accomplished because it's so organized. It's rewarding to work with such a great cause and to be able to accomplish so much good in the time we spend there. And I enjoy that I am able to work towards this goal with my Railinc teammates." – Ward, Business Solutions Manager

Environmental Stewardship

Freight rail is the most efficient and sustainable way to transport goods across North America. With just one gallon of fuel, a ton of freight can be moved more than 470 miles and less than 1 percent of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from freight railroads. The freight rail industry is dedicated to limiting greenhouse emissions, reducing their carbon footprint and increasing fuel efficiency with technology. Our products, such as the RailSight Suite of Applications, are part of the technology that support the efforts of the freight rail industry to run more efficiently and preserve the environment. RailSight provides complete visibility with real-time data that allows shippers, equipment owners, 3PLs and transportation management software providers to make informed decisions for fleet optimization. When equipped with comprehensive data, the rail industry can make better decisions that help improve industry efficiency.
