The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in February was substantially up compared to February 2021. Carloads originated increased 10.6 percent, from 290,938 in February 2021 to 321,847 in February 2022.
All carload groups were up. Metallic Ores led gains with a 64.4 percent increase. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel was up 49.0 percent and Food and Kindred Products and Petroleum Products increased 29.6 and 22.9 percent respectively.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 640,519 through February 28, up about 17,000 carloads, or 2.8 percent from 2021.
