The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroad in April 2020 was down compared to April 2019. Carloads originated decreased 13.3 percent, from 358,780 in April 2019 to 310,883 in April 2020. 

Metallic Ores led gains with an 18.0 percent increase. Grain was up 14.1 percent, and Pulp, Paper, and Allied Products increased 6.4 percent. Motor Vehicles and Equipment led declines, down 71.3 percent. Chemicals, Food and Kindred Products, Metals and Products, Nonmetallic Minerals, Grain Mill Products, Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel, Lumber and Wood Products, Trailer or Container, Petroleum Products, Stone, Clay and Glass Products, Waste and Scrap Materials, Coal and All Other Carloads were also down in April.

Carloads originated for 2020 were at 1,321,283 through April 30, down about 47,000 carloads, or 3.4 percent from 2019.
