The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in September 2024 was up compared to September 2023. Carloads originated increased 4 percent, from 342,988 in September 2023 to 356,713 in September 2024.
Grain led September gains, up 53.5 percent, followed by Petroleum Products, up 25.8 percent. All Other Carloads, which do not include the commodities listed below, led declines, down 11.6 percent.

Carloads originated for 2024 were at 3,223,866 through September 30, up nearly 136,000 carloads, or 4.2 percent from 2023.
