The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in August 2024 was up compared to August 2023. Carloads originated increased 6.1 percent, from 355,619 in August 2023 to 371,570 in August 2024.
Coal and Grain led August gains, both up 25.2 percent, followed by Trailer or Container, up 25 percent. Metallic Ores led declines, down 21.6 percent, followed by Metals and Products, down 10.4 percent.

Carloads originated for 2024 were at 2,867,153 through August 31, up nearly 122,000 carloads, or 4.4 percent from 2023.
