The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in September 2022 was up compared to September 2021. Carloads originated increased 0.6 percent, from 342,052 in September 2021 to 344,015 in September 2022.
Coal led gains with a 35.3 percent increase. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel was up 35.3 percent, and Motor Vehicles and Equipment increased 17.3 percent. Trailer or Container led declines this month, down 18.5 percent. Grain Mill Products, Waste and Scrap Materials, and Chemicals were also down in September.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 3,147,853 through September 30, up about 13,000 carloads, or 0.4 percent from 2021.
