The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in March 2022 was up compared to March 2021. Carloads originated increased 3.6 percent, from 362,379 in March 2021 to 375,343 in March 2022.
Food and Kindred Products led gains with a 17.3 percent increase. Petroleum Products was up 14.9 percent, and Waste and Scrap Materials and Pulp, Paper and Allied Products increased 12.4 and 11.8 percent respectively. Metallic Ores led declines, down 11.5 percent. Coal, Motor Vehicles and Equipment, Grain and Other Carloads were also down in March.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 1,015,862 through March 31, up about 30,000 carloads, or 3.1 percent from 2021.
