The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroad in January 2021 was up compared to January 2020. Carloads originated increased 0.8 percent, from 334,637 in January 2020 to 337,206 in January 2021. 

Grain led gains with a 46.1 percent increase. Coal was up 28.9 percent, and Stone, Clay and Glass Products and Lumber and Wood Products increased 2.2 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively. Metallic Ores led declines, down 28.2 percent. Grain Mill Products, Chemicals, Petroleum Products, Motor Vehicles and Equipment, Pulp, Paper and Allied Products, Nonmetallic Minerals, Food and Kindred Products, Metallic Ores, Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel, Metals and Products and Other Carloads were also down in January.
