The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroad in January 2020 was down compared to January 2019. Carloads originated decreased 3.3 percent, from 351,884 in January 2019 to 340,285 in January 2020.
Grain Mill Products led gains with a 19.1 percent increase. Nonmetallic Minerals were up 11.8 percent, and Motor Vehicles and Equipment and Chemicals each increased 8.2 percent. Coal led declines, down 22.9 percent. Grain, Lumber and Wood Products, Trailer or Container, Petroleum Products, Food and Kindred Products, Metallic Ores, Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel, Metals and Products and Other Carloads were also down in January.
