The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in March 2018 was down compared to March 2017. Total carloads decreased 0.8 percent, from 362,391 in March 2017 to 359,479 in March 2018.
Crushed stone, sand and gravel led gains with a 28.8 percent increase. Nonmetallic minerals and pulp, paper and allied products also increased, up 15.7 percent and 12.2 percent, respectively. Trailer or container led declines for the fourth consecutive month, down 31.2 percent. Coal followed with a decrease of 10.7 percent. Total carloads for 2018 were at about 1 million, down 13,752 carloads, or 1.3 percent from 2017.
