The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroad in May 2019 was up slightly compared to May 2018. Carloads originated increased 0.2 percent, from 375,514 in May 2018 to 376,359 in May 2019.

Nonmetallic Minerals again led gains with a 46.2 percent increase. Grain Mill Products was up 23.2 percent, and Motor Vehicles and Equipment and Chemicals increased 14.3 and 10.4 percent respectively. Metallic Ores led declines, down 13.4 percent. Coal, Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel, Food and Kindred Products, Stone, Clay and Glass Products, Waste and Scrap Materials, Pulp, Paper and Allied Products, Metals and Products, Lumber and Wood Products and Other Carloads were also down in May.

Carloads originated for 2019 were at 1,769,533 through May 31, up about 22,00 carloads, or 1.2 percent from 2018.
