The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in June 2018 was up compared to June 2017. Carloads originated increased 1.3 percent, from 360,852 in June 2017 to 365,595 in June 2018.

All other carloads led gains with a 10.0 percent increase. Metals and products as well as pulp, paper and allied products also increased, up 8.0 percent and 4.0 percent, respectively. Coal led declines for the second consecutive month, down 18.8 percent. Metallic ores followed with a decrease of 12.6 percent.

Carloads originated for 2018 were at about 2.12 million, up 9,659 carloads, or 0.5 percent from 2017. Railinc publishes this information as a service to the rail industry.
