The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in December 2022 was down compared to December 2021. Carloads originated decreased 0.9 percent, from 336,827       in December 2021 to 333,739 in December 2022. 

Coal led gains with a 33 percent increase. Petroleum Products and Motor Vehicles and Equipment were also up in December, increasing 10.6 percent and 7.2 percent, respectively. Trailer or Container led declines this month, down 14.2 percent.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 4,194,358 through December 31, up about 34,000 carloads, or 0.8 percent from 2021.
