The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in April 2024 was up compared to April 2023. Carloads originated increased 8.6 percent, from 335,412 in April 2023 to 364,256 in April 2024.
Nonmetallic Minerals led April gains, up 38.3 percent, followed by Petroleum Products, up 28.6 percent. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel led declines, down 6.1 percent.

Carloads originated for 2024 were at 1,397,032 through April 30, up nearly 37,000 carloads, or 2.6 percent from 2023.
