The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in October 2023 was up compared to October 2022. Carloads originated increased 6.9 percent, from 356,347 in October 2022 to 380,966 in October 2023. 

Metals and Products led October gains with an 26.5 percent increase, followed by Chemicals and Petroleum Products, which increased 20.2 percent and 18.8 percent, respectively. Metallic Ores led declines again, down 7.7 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 3,538,627 through October 31, up about 97,000 carloads, or 2.7 percent from 2022.
