The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads remained steady in year-to-year comparisons. Total carloads were up by 1.2 percent from 288,049 in February 2014 to 291,362 in February 2015.
Chemicals and stone, clay and glass products experienced the greatest increase, with both up 11 percent, followed by grain, up 10 percent. The most significant declines were observed in metallic ores, down 57 percent, followed by waste and scrap materials, down 10 percent. (Click here to download this file as an Excel table.)
