The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in March 2017 was higher compared to March 2016. Total carloads were up, from 343,664 in March 2016, to 368,080 in March 2017.
 


Trailer or container led gains with a 29.6 percent increase, followed by petroleum products, up 27.6 percent, and coal, which increased 22.5 percent. Motor vehicles and equipment, metals and products, and pulp, paper and allied products experienced the greatest declines, down 5.9 percent, 4.4 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively.
