The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads increased in year-to-year comparisons. Total carloads were up from 370,163 in May 2012 to 392,609 in May 2013, resulting in a six percent increase.
 


The largest gains were observed in metallic ores, up 92 percent, followed by coal and nonmetallic minerals, up 55 percent and 27 percent, respectively. Grain and grain mill products experienced the most significant declines, down 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively. (Click here to download this table as an Excel file.)
