The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads held steady in year-to-year comparisons, up just 0.1 percent. Total carloads were up from 350,400 in May 2014 to 350,682 in May 2015.
Trailer or container and nonmetallic minerals experienced the most significant gains, up 51 percent and 23 percent, respectively. The largest declines were observed in metals and products, down 28 percent, along with metallic ores, down 20 percent. (Click here to download this file as an Excel table.)
