The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in March 2023 was down compared to March 2022. Carloads originated decreased 0.9 percent, from 366,725 in March 2022 to 363,458 in March 2023.
Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel topped March gains with a 23.7 percent increase. Five other car groups increased during March, including Chemicals, which was up 16.8 percent. Pulp, Paper and Allied Products led declines, down 19.3 percent, followed by Trailer or Container which declined 16.9 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 1,052,510 through March 31, up about 60,000 carloads, or 5.7 percent from 2022.
