The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroad in July 2019 was slightly up compared to July 2018. Carloads originated increased 0.4 percent, from 368,588 in July 2018 to 369,913 in July 2019.

Nonmetallic Minerals led gains for the fourth consecutive month with a 43.4 percent increase. Grain Mill Products was up 19.0 percent, and Petroleum Products and Food and Kindred Products increased 15.5 and 14.8 percent respectively. Coal led declines, down 20.2 percent. Metallic Ores, Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel, Waste and Scrap Materials, Pulp, Paper and Allied Products, Metals and Products, and Other Carloads were also down in July.

Carloads originated for 2019 were at 2,490,747 through July 31, up about 14,000 carloads, or 0.6 percent from 2018.
