The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in July 2024 was up compared to July 2023. Carloads originated increased 11.1 percent, from 332,084 in July 2023 to 368,936 in July 2024. 
Grain led July gains, up 45.3 percent, followed by Trailer or Container, up 27.8 percent. Metallic Ores led declines, down 14.6 percent, followed by Motor Vehicles and Equipment, down 14.1 percent.

The North American rail equipment fleet increased its total size during the first quarter of 2024.
