The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in August 2023 was down compared to August 2022. Carloads originated decreased 1.4 percent, from 368,315 in August 2022 to 363,238 in August 2023.
Petroleum Products topped August gains with a 28 percent increase, followed by Motor Vehicles and Equipment which increased 24.8 percent. Nonmetallic Minerals led declines for the second month in a row, down 17.1 percent, followed by Grain which declined by 16.1 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 2,804,631 through August 31, up about 58,000 carloads, or 2.1 percent from 2022.
