The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in May 2023 was down compared to May 2022. Carloads originated decreased 0.7 percent, from 353,028 in May 2022 to 350,661 in May 2023. 

Chemicals and Motor Vehicles and Equipment topped May gains with a 15.3 percent increase and 15.1 percent increase, respectively. Nonmetallic Materials led declines for the second month in a row, down 19.4 percent, followed by Metallic Ores which declined 18.1 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 1,751,280 through May 31, up about 61,000 carloads, or 3.5 percent from 2022.
