The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in September 2023 was up compared to September 2022. Carloads originated increased 4.3 percent, from 338,509 in September 2022 to 353,030 in September 2023.
Motor Vehicles and Equipment led September gains with an 18.2 percent increase, followed by Chemicals which increased 16.5 percent. Metallic Ores led declines, down 20.7 percent, followed by Pulp, Paper, and Allied Products which declined 12.8 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 3,157,661 through September 30, up about 72,000 carloads, or 2.3 percent from 2022.
