The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in September 2022 was up compared to October 2021. Carloads originated increased 3.1 percent, from 350,454 in October 2021 to 361,290 in October 2022.
Coal led gains once again with a 54.8 percent increase. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel was up 27.5 percent, and Motor Vehicles and Equipment increased 22.8 percent. Trailer or Container led declines this month, down 13.2 percent. Nonmetallic Minerals and Pulp, Paper, and Allied Products were also down in October.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 3,509,143 through October 31, up about 19,000 carloads, or 0.7 percent from 2021.
