The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in March 2024 was up slightly compared to March 2023. Carloads originated increased 0.8 percent, from 358,777 in March 2023 to 361,606 in March 2024.
Coal led March gains, up 27.8 percent from the previous year. All Other Carloads, which fall outside of the sixteen commodity groups listed below, led declines, down 16.5 percent.

Carloads originated for 2024 were at 1,032,776 through March 31, up nearly 3,000 carloads, or 0.7 percent from 2023.
