The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in June 2023 was down compared to June 2022. Carloads originated decreased 1.5 percent, from 351,085 in June 2022 to 345,765 in June 2023. 

Coal topped June gains with a 16.3 percent increase, followed by Motor Vehicles and Equipment which increased 15.2 percent. Metallic Ores led declines, down 22.6 percent, followed by Nonmetallic Minerals and Grain which declined by 20.5 percent and 20.3 percent, respectively.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 2,097,045 through June 30, up about 56,000 carloads, or 2.6 percent from 2022.
