The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in June 2021 was up compared to June 2020. Carloads originated increased 25.2 percent, from 298,189 in June 2020 to 373,433 in June 2021. 

Virtually all carload groups were up. Coal led gains with an 88.2 percent increase. Motor Vehicles and Equipment was up 83.1 percent and Petroleum Products and Trailer or Container increased 63.1 and 46.1 percent respectively. Grain was the only decline, down 7.3 percent in June.

Carloads originated for 2021 were at 2,108,938 through June 30, up about 225,000 carloads, or 12.0 percent from 2020.
