The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in February 2023 was up compared to February 2022. Carloads originated increased 6.2 percent, from 310,231 in February 2022 to 329,351 in February 2023.
Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel led gains in February with a 34.5 percent increase. Petroleum Products and Chemicals were also up, increasing 30.3 percent and 22.4 percent, respectively. Grain led declines, down 16 percent, followed by Trailer or Container which declined 14 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 689,052 through February 28, up about 64,000 carloads, or 9.2 percent from 2022.
