The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in August 2022 was up compared to August 2021. Carloads originated increased 2.4 percent, from 365,143 in August 2021 to 373,968 in August 2022.
Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel led gains with a 24.5 percent increase. Grain was up 21.9 percent, and Food and Kindred Products increased 15.8 percent. Coal led declines this month, down 22 percent. Metallic Ores, Trailer or Container, Motor Vehicles and Equipment and All Other Carloads were also down in August.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 2,803,838 through August 31, up about 11,000 carloads, or 1.0 percent from 2021.
