The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in May 2022 was down compared to May 2021. Carloads originated decreased 1.2 percent, from 361,349 in May 2021 to 356,887 in May 2022.
Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel led gains with a 25.0 percent increase. Metals and Products was up 23.9 percent, and Pulp, Paper, and Allied Products increased 11.3 percent. Trailer or Container led declines, down 24.3 percent. Chemicals, Metallic Ores, Motor Vehicles and Equipment and Other Carloads were also down in May.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 1,734,542 through May 31, up about 32,000 carloads, or 1.8 percent from 2021.
