The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in April 2023 was up compared to April 2022. Carloads originated increased 0.9 percent, from 344,944 in April 2022 to 348,109 in April 2023. 

Motor Vehicles and Equipment topped April gains with a 25.6 percent increase. Chemicals and Petroleum Products were both up 17.7 percent. Nonmetallic Materials led declines, down 17.6 percent, followed by Grain which declined 15.3 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 1,400,619 through April 30, up about 63,000 carloads, or 4.5 percent from 2022.
