The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in July 2023 was up compared to July 2022. Carloads originated increased 2.4 percent, from 336,520 in July 2022 to 344,591 in July 2023. 

Motor Vehicles and Equipment topped July gains with a 26.5 percent increase, followed by Petroleum Products which increased 18.4 percent. Nonmetallic Minerals led declines, down 23.4 percent, followed by Grain which declined by 18.1 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 2,441,363 through July 31, up about 63,000 carloads, or 2.6 percent from 2022.
