The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in July 2022 was down compared to July 2021. Carloads originated decreased 5.2 percent, from 359,160 in July 2021 to 340,582 in July 2022.
Nonmetallic Minerals continued to lead gains with a 37.7 percent increase. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel was up 23.0 percent, and Lumber and Wood Products increased 14.1 percent. Trailer or Container led declines again this month, down 28.8 percent. Coal, Chemicals, Motor Vehicles and Equipment and All Other Carloads were also down in July.

Carloads originated for 2022 were at 2,429,870 through July 31, up about 2,000 carloads, or 0.1 percent from 2021.
