The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in December 2024 was up compared to December 2023. Carloads originated increased 6.2 percent, from 336,683 in December 2023 to 357,658 in December 2024.
Grain Mill Products continued to lead gains, up 45.3 percent, followed by Food and Kindred Products, up 20.1 percent. Metallic Ores was down once again, down 52.6 percent.

Carloads originated for 2024 were at 4,311,261 through December 31, up nearly 164,000 carloads, or 3.8 percent from 2023.
