The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads increased by 13 percent in year-to-year comparisons. Total carloads were up from 349,678 in December 2013 to 393,597 in December 2014.



Commodities experiencing the greatest increases this month were crushed stone, sand, and gravel, along with nonmetallic minerals, up 47 percent and 30 percent, respectively. The most significant decline was noted in metallic ores, down 21 percent (Click here to download this file as an Excel table).
