The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads held steady with a less than 1 percent increase compared to September of last year. Total carloads were up from 350,510 in September 2015 to 351,401 in September 2016.



Grain and metallic ores led commodity gains with 21 percent and 15 percent increases, respectively. Nonmetallic minerals and crushed stone, sand and gravel experienced the most significant decline, down 40 percent and 15 percent, respectively.
