The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in December 2023 was up compared to December 2022. Carloads originated increased 7.7 percent, from 327,756 in December 2022 to 353,111 in December 2023. 

Petroleum Products and Motor Vehicles and Equipment led December gains, up 35.8 percent and 34.7 percent, respectively. Nonmetallic Minerals led declines for the second month in a row, down 9.1 percent.

Carloads originated for 2023 were at 4,252,723 through December 31, up about 137,000 carloads, or 3.2 percent from 2022.
