The number of carloads moved on short line and regional railroads in May 2024 was up compared to May 2023. Carloads originated increased 4.5 percent, from 355,619 in May 2023 to 371,570 in May 2024.
Petroleum Products led May gains, up 28.7 percent, followed by Trailer or Container, up 16.8 percent. Crushed Stone, Sand and Gravel led declines for the second month in a row, down 9.4 percent.

Carloads originated for 2024 were at 1,768,602 through May 31, up nearly 53,000 carloads, or 3.0 percent from 2023.
